Is Aggression A Diagnosis? no!

A 5 year old can look at a dog raging at the end of a leash and declare it aggressive, doesn’t say much about diagnosis. What is causing the dog to show aggression – and when you have to ask that question, aggression becomes nothing more than a symptom – the outcome of a problem. Do you fix the aggression or do you work on the underlying issues? You will see trainers discuss “stopping” the aggression, or “fixing” it – but unfortunately, many times the dog ends up only being controlled and managed.

If a dog is showing aggression because it’s afraid, do you work on the aggression or work on the fear?

Training should be about cooperation and understanding, not control.
