People call me, “I need to train my dog” – ok, train for what? “I don’t know, I need to train him.” This is not the way to start a conversation with a trainer – and will put the trainer into a situation where they are likely going to dictate what training is applied. And you to likely say “sounds good” to things you don’t really want.
Try to think about what it is you want from the dog before you start calling around, and find a trainer that can work with you to get you there. If you simply want a dog that you can take anywhere and it won’t eat the public – chances are you won’t get that from someone that does basic obedience with puppies only. Won’t stop them from trying mind you…
You wouldn’t call a roofer to do the plumbing in your home, correct? Make sure you get the right trainer for your needs.
Many trainers today tend to specialize, there are certain things they love to do – and there are things they are very good at. Some trainers will do bite work, others can trick train your dog, others can help with your dogs aggressive tendencies. This is why it’s so important to figure out what you want from the dog beforehand.
