Trying On Prong Collars

If you’re going to use a tool on your dog, I really urge you to put it on yourself first, find out what the dog is going to feel. Don’t wrap it around your hand, arm or leg, wrap it around your neck. Yes, I’ve donned many tools from cheap to expensive – they do hurt. I couldn’t imagine having this on my neck and having someone give it a yank.

It was my first time trying on a Herm Sprenger, this is the brand recommended by trainers. Had never tried one before – yeah, they don’t feel very good and only wore it for a few minutes. Mild pressure, prongs dig in, not a good sensation. When it moves around the neck, the prongs drag the skin causing redness and it does hurt.

The clasp isn’t that easy to get open, near went into a mild panic trying to get it off. For 2 hours after, the redness on my neck was still there, and oddly, it felt like I was still wearing it. It’s a really weird psychological sensation.

If you’re going to use a tool like this on your dog, do try it on yourself first. It might change your mind.
