A worrying trend under the title balanced dog training

Jamie Penrith is another trainer I like, though I don’t agree with everything – and that’s ok. Take what you feel is good and leave the bad.

I’m sure we’ve all the videos of dogs on placeboards, or dogs placing anywhere. We are supposed to ooh and ahhh over it, but it’s not hard to do. Show us you working with a dog to get it running a dog park, that would be impressive. But dogs sitting on a placeboard with a electronic collar around their neck is moreso about the trainer. Look what I can do. Monty will place, and it hasn’t been trained.

“There’s almost this portrayal that dogs need to be completely controlled so that anything like independent and free spirit aspect of the dog. The dog displaying species specific behaviours, being able to interact freely – and just be a dog seems to be that isn’t a good thing.”

And Jamie is spot on with this. Join up to balanced dog training groups on Facebook or on Reddit or any other forum and this is what you’re going to find. Owners post to these groups, no questions about why the dog could be acting out – just a recommendation to control and manage the dogs life. Heaven forbid a dog shows a bit of aggression, that for sure either has to be controlled and managed – or the dog needs to be put down.

Ask yourself what you want from your dog – and try to find a trainer that is willing to work with you on your goals – not theirs. I find too often, the owner is only given the choice of what the trainer wants.
