This won’t be a popular post – but with so many negative things that vets do to our dogs, one has to question motives. Whatever happened to “do no harm”? Throughout history, young human boys and girls were desexed young, before puberty. There is no shortage of the documentation show the bad long term. Yes, human beings are animals.
Now, don’t get me wrong, some dogs are fine through their entire life after going through all this. Some however…?
Neuter and spay – especially early. I will never spay or neuter another dog unless it’s absolutely necessary. This is a big one for me. Big question, why are vets not practicing easier surgical techniques like tubal ligation or vasectomy instead of cutting the organs out? These have far faster recovery times.
Are you getting the information from your vet to make an informed decision about spaying or neutering your dog? Probably not. Vets are gung ho on spay and neuter, and so is most of society. There are so many myths propagated by the dog community at large.
There is simply no medical benefit to spaying and neutering. Prove me wrong.
When you spay a dog, it’s surgical menopause. The vet is cutting out the ovaries, the uterus etc – is that really necessary? Why don’t they do simple operations like tubal ligation to prevent pregnancy and leave the dogs hormones intact? Hormones are extremely important to animals – humans included. Take a female pup that hasn’t gone through puberty yet, remove the estrogen that the dog needs and face the outcomes? But people say “the dog won’t get mammary cancer or tumors”. That’s wrong, spay has no effect on whether the dog gets cancer or not. Neuter, great, the dog won’t get testicular cancer. But again, you’re removing the dogs ability to go through puberty. Is this doing no harm? Vets are removing the primary organs necessary to produce estrogen and testosterone – vital hormones.
There is only one organ capable of producing small amounts of testosterone and estrogen after spay and neuter – that’s the adrenal glands. If/when they become exhausted, it can lead to issues like cushings, addisons and other serious medical issues. Spay and neuter can suppress the thyroid, – hypothyroidism. I have had so many vets over the years tell me that hypothyroidism is overdiagnosed – to the point that they will fight you against running any tests.
Hypothyroidism can mimic allergy – and I often wonder how many dogs are suffering needlessly because all the typical vet does is food changes and drugs. Not just that, but hypothyroidism itself carries a long list of medical issues like diabetes, heart disease etc – and can cause behavioural issues like aggression. Great, lets put the dog on steroids like prednisone which further suppressed the thyroid gland. See a problem here? Then it’s “here’s my opinion, now pay me”.
The dog tends to be larger than it was meant to be as a result of the lack of hormones – the bone plates don’t close properly. This can lead to many joint issues. Top that off with another wrong think – the puppy shouldn’t be getting too much exercise, hard on the joints? The list is long. If vets don’t know this, then there is an issue. If vets do know this – then they are setting your dog up for later sickness and disease which comes with money down the road.
Has your vet mentioned any of this prior to cutting a dogs sex organs out? If not, you might want to confront your vet.
Dog food.
How many dogs have died due to dog food Recalls galore, but people forgive and forget rather quickly. Dog food is likely the number one creator of sickness and disease – and vets have people convinced that the dog is an omnivore. Dogs don’t produce the amylase required to break down all the starches we feed them in dog food. The dog is a carnivore. The vet is supposed to specialize in this – so, they are either outright lying or ignorant of it. Which is better? Neither.
You’ll see vets talk about how corn is such a great protein. Corn is man made, humans can’t digest it – but yet dogs can? The dog isn’t getting whole peaches and cream either – it’s the leftovers from dent corn that is inedible. Dent corn is the number one corn crop in the USA today, but do you ever see it in stores? It’s not edible – they process the sugar out of it – and whats left over is you’re feeding your dog. It’s a cheap filler – why do you think there is so much coming out the back end of the dog? Mention diabetes to people – and they tend to believe it’s all type 1 in dogs. No, it’s not. Think about this – I’m sure we all know someone that is diabetic. What does the doctor tell them? Lay off the processed foods, watch your carb and starch intake, eat whole foods. What does a vet do? Here’s another bag of dog food that likely caused it in the first place. Do no harm? Really?
I’ve been feeding raw for over 20 years now, and helped switch countless dogs over to a raw diet. Interestingly, I haven’t had a sick dog. All I feed is meat, bone, organ and fish – no veg or other – that’s it. If it was such a bad diet as vets and other owners suggest, my dogs would be long dead, but instead, they thrive. The last holistic vet I met gave me the most honest conversation I’ve ever had with a vet. “I won’t make much money off this little guy” as she proceeded to parade him around her office to show him off to clients.
There is over 1 million people in this city – and I know of 4 vets that support raw feeding. That is sad testament to the vet industry today.
Vaccinations. Oh, the fear surrounding vaccinations and parvo is the big one – and this alone is causing so many issues. There are people out there that adopt the “no paws on the floor” mentality when it comes to vaccines. What is the result of this? You’re being told to raise your dog in an anti-social environment – creating an anti-social dog instead of having it out in the world getting socialized. Now when you bring the dog out into the big scary world – you’re seeing behavioural issues. Now all you hear is “hire a trainer” because you can’t possibly help your dog on your own? See the cash cow going on? One is feeding the other.
Parvo is considered “ubiquitous” – it is literally everywhere. It’s in your home, in your vehicle, on your shoes – you cannot kill it. A virus is not a living thing. But people declare they took the dog to a park and it got parvo? My Miniature Pinscher Monty is 11 years old now – and “shock” – he’s only had his first round of puppy vaccines, nothing since. He’s been through thousand of dogs in dog parks, pet stores – he’s been in contact with parvo, kennel cough and the rest but he’s never gotten sick. It’s called an immune system. People should focus on immunology instead of immunizations. I haven’t had a vaccine in over 40 years – but yet, I’m still here.
Medications and drugs
Medications like prozac and trazadone are being given out like candy by the vet “behaviorist” for aggression or reactivity. Aggression and reactivity are nothing more than symptoms – the outcome of a problem. You’re trying to treat symptoms instead of getting to the heart of the matter. Prozac is hard on people – dogs too, but yet, keep increasing the dose. And how many people actually see results from feeding prozac to the dog for the rest of its life?
But yet, many vets carry the attitude that cannabis can be deadly. See the issue here? You can grow your own medicine for your dog that is far more effective – but you’re being told it’s toxic. Pile on the fear – and that equates to money.
Flea medications.
Flea and tick powder and other preventative medicine. Give your dog this poison “just in case”. Again, how many dogs have died due to flea collars and powders? Ingested poisonous medications? but yet, people forgive and forget.
After reading all this, one has to wonder if vets today are setting dogs up to fail – guaranteed income down the road. And yet, where is the informed consent? Where is the information that these vets should be giving owners? Few and far between.
Dr. Karen Becker on spay and neuter for example. How many vets call her a “fringe vet”? This woman has alot of horse sense – and that is clearly lacking in vets today.
