Definitions:
a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. Or due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others.
So what does it mean to respect a dog? First of all, it means treating the dog like the species that it is. Treating a dog like anything other than a dog isn’t fair. Respecting the dog also means to let the dog be a dog – but again, if there isn’t any trust, this is not possible. Again, you’ll never be confident in any animal that you don’t trust – humans included.
Can you admire your dogs abilities simply to be a dog? To have the ability to enjoy a dog park, to be calm around dogs, to meet people calmly in public etc? If you can’t, then changes are needed. But does the dog need to change or is it you that needs changing?
